My favorite sports memory occurred on August 30, 2010 at Jerry Uht Park at an Erie Seawolves minor league game. I attended the game with my dad and two younger sisters. What made this game so special was after attending dozens of baseball games in my lifetime I was finally able to catch a foul ball.
The catch that didn’t happen.
Earlier in the game a ball was smoked in our direction, our seats were on the second level of the first base side. As the ball was coming our way I excitedly jumped out of my seat and took a few steps down the row of empty seats towards the ball before pulling my hand back in. As someone who used to play baseball I know how fast the ball can be traveling after goes flying off the bat, and realizing I wasn’t wearing a glove I knew this was going to do more than sting so I pulled my hand back and watched as the ball flew in between the gap and out of the stadium towards the parking lot. My one sister who was 10 at the time wasn’t going to let me live this one down, Zach why didn’t you catch that ball she kept saying.
The game was winding down, it was the top of the 8 th when my sister decided she wanted another hotdog. Before she leaves she hands me her glove and says you better wear this. Although when the glove is barely bigger than your hand, I wasn’t sure how much it was going to help, but I put it on and continued watching the game. A few batters later Crack! And the ball is off in our direction, but a little off to our left. I watch as the ball enters the stands takes a sideways bounce and is traveling straight at me. With the undersized glove all I was able to do was swipe the ball down so to avoid any collateral damage. I panic as I know there is a loose foul ball in my area, and if I don’t recover this one I surely will never hear the end of it from my little sister. I look down as the ball is about to start rolling down to the lower row of seats, and I snatch it. A few minutes later my sisters returns, I give her the ball and she couldn’t have been happier. After the game ends we make our way down to field level to try and get it signed, but no luck, but at least I was finally able to catch a foul ball.
