I never dreamed about my wedding day, so when my boyfriend proposed, I was at a loss as to what to do next. I hadn’t given much thought to planning a wedding or what I would like to remember about such a special day. While I didn’t have a clue, it seemed obvious that our theme should be Halloween related in some way. And so the planning began.
After shopping around for dresses, invitations and such, I decided to incorporate leaves and pumpkins for the fall theme, and lace as the material accent to keep the theme consistent. While purple was never my favorite color, it seemed the obvious choice for the Halloween theme. So, I started with invitations that had purple leaves on them to link everything together.
The gown I chose was a simple strapless design with a lovely lace overlay that covered the whole dress and created the train. For my bridesmaids, they wore black skirts and the tops were purple with a black lace overlay.
For the ceremony, we decided to focus more on the fall beauty and save the Halloween fun for the reception. I purchased a lit archway and decorated it with leaf covered vines and created a fall swag which I attached to the top of the arch. Two fall flower arrangements were placed next to the arch on either side. My favorite decorations turned out to be the carved pumpkins that we used to line the aisle. Once the ceremony was over, they were brought into the reception hall, as well.
The reception was more of a Halloween theme with purple black and silver throughout the room. We started with purple linens on the tables which were draped with a lacy, leaf and vine covering. I created my own centerpieces made up of three pillar candles, hand decorated by myself, on a silver charger plate and surrounded with purple glass beads. As guests arrived, they sat down to find a silver tin filled with candy corn as a favor and a black and silver sequined mask. For the final touch, our cake had pumpkins and leafy vines down one side.
When you plan a wedding, whether you’ve been dreaming about it your whole life, or you never gave it one thought, the best thing to do is start with one basic idea and build up from there. Choosing one or two colors and a few ways to accent the theme will create a beautiful setting for a truly memorable day.
