Located on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin is an exciting whimsical place that offers a wonderful treat for the kids. From fun animated circus characters performing overhead to eating soup over a landscape made out of Legos, this place is sure to bring out the kid in everyone no matter what your age is.
The name of the business is Ella’s Deli and they are located at 2902 East Washington Avenue in Madison. They have been deemed Madison’s Award Winning Kosher-Style Deli and Ice Cream Parlor and the “Best Place to take Kids” for over 20 years now.
The atmosphere here is full of a lot of fun and excitement from the floor to the ceiling. Throughout the building you will find animated figures that were created by local artists and the employees themselves. Objects you will see range from circus bears to flying supermen, magical castles, clowns flying planes to wizards. They are all brightly colored and full of a lot of detail.
Besides the maze overhead with billiard balls rolling on the course and characters randomly popping out of the ceiling from trap doors, the tables themselves also offer a unique presentation. Each of the tables has its own design. One is filled with old baseball cards another with old candies that I remember having from my childhood. One has a moving train set that circles around the track inside the glass table as you eat, and another one is a medieval scene constructed completely out of legos containing movable parts. So each time you visit here, you can experience your meal at a different table! For you Wisconsin Sports fans, there is also tables highlighting the Wisconsin Badgers and of course the Green Bay Packers.
For the menu, it is as fun as the atmosphere. It was well written and designed to add that extra pizazz to what seems to be endless menu choices. For soups you had choices like Vegetarian, chicken matzo ball and sweet and sour cabbage.
The appetizer menu offers you tasty choices like onion rings, French fried dill pickles, breaded mushroom, cheese fries and hard boiled eggs with Russian dressing. For sandwiches you have options like different styles of reubens, chopped liver, chicken or egg salad, hard salami, different burger choices, sloppy Joes, meatloaf and much more.
For you hot dog lovers out there you have a great selection of franks with different toppings. Choices like Frank and beans, the NY Jumbo Cheese, Kraut on it Frank, Slaw and Cheese, the Reuben Frank and many others will be sure to make your taste buds go wild!
For those that are looking for a refreshing salad they offer some great choices for you. The menu is full of options like baked goat cheese salad, lox salad, reuben salad, baked cranberry goat cheese salad, chicken oriental salad, Mediterranean salad, and many others. Don’t forget to top it with one of Ella’s own homemade dressings like creamy cilantro, apple cider vinaigrette, or the Mediterranean lemon.
For dinner you can choose items like Meatloaf, chicken, Holishkes which are tasty sweet and sour filled cabbage rolls filled with beef, different fish platters, and a variety of hoagies. The list goes on and on.
Just for the kids they have a great menu of selections. The kids can enjoy fish and fries, sloppy Joes, grilled cheese, PB&J, chicken strips, spaghetti, burgers and much more! They also offer kids sized dessert portions.
The also serve a great selection of eggs, bagels, French toast and omelettes for breakfast. No matter what you are looking to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack, Ella’s is sure to have something you like!
The portions sizes at Ella’s are very filling at Ella’s but trust me when I say you have to save room for dessert. Just looking at the dessert menu will add a few extra pounds to your hips! They offer you 29 selections of Sundaes with 18 standard flavors. With choices like espresso, blue moon, and Zanzibar chocolate how can you pass that up!
Ella’s also offers a variety of shakes, malts, flavored sodas, and floating shakes. For freshly baked desserts they serve caramel apple crunch, cheese cake, sour cream chocolate cake, and pound cake. They also offer daily specials. The day we went my husband we shared the seesaw, which was creamy chocolate and vanilla custard ice cream topped with caramel, shredded coconut and marshmallows
For those that are looking for a challenge then the Sparkling Kazoo is for you! This is Ella’s masterpiece sundae with 32 scoops of ice cream and sherbet topped with sparklers that are lit. For $50 this is a treat for a big group of people looking to see if they can finish it. The waitress told us that in 6 years of working there, she has only seen 10 groups finish it.
The fun definitely does not end inside. Outside of the building is a large traditional carousel full of beautiful artistic bright colored horses. It is known to be one of 75 original carousels in the United States.
