For the past two years Myrtle Avenue has celebrated the holiday season with a Holiday Windows Contest, where merchants offered up their windows for artists to decorate. This year is no different, and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership has announced this year’s theme is A Winter Wonderland on Myrtle. The winning artist this year will get $250, with the runner up and third place winner also receiving a prize. Almost forty merchant storefronts participated in 2009. Last year the merchant window winner was Optimum Care Rehab, by artists LeAnne Iverson and Benjamin. In 2008 artists Benjie Sirota and Julia Wadsworth won for their window at Zaytoons and while they did not win first place the next year they did place third, again with Zytoons.
Submissions for this year’s window must be turned in by November 11th. Detailed rules can be found at the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership website. A $50 stipend will be given to artists upon completion of the window, to offset the cost of material and labor. Perhaps the best incentive is the exposure and connections the artists are building with the neighborhood and with the merchants. Whoever wins, the residents of Carroll Gardens are the real winners in the contest as they will get to enjoy the holiday spirit on Myrtle Avenue for the next couple months.
