Mythical creatures have found their way into the hearts and minds of modern society. I have compiled a list of my own personal favorite mythical creatures with descriptions on each one. The list starts with my ultimate favorite and ends at number ten. Many you have heard of before, however, there are some that are not your everyday creature. Enjoy!
Vampires have become a cult sensation with movies and books such as Twilight, Underworld, and the Vampire Diaries breaking records. However, even before Twilight made sparkling vampires the new phenomenon, vampires have been loved by generations. Some famous vampires from recent history include Dracula, Angel, the Cullen clan, and the vampire brothers from the Vampire Diaries.
The vampire has been revamped throughout history to include the blood-drinking monster of the night to the sparkling and overall nice Cullen family. However, with each description come the most common similarities. No matter which version of vamp you enjoy, they all drink blood. Whether it is human blood from live victims, blood bank donations, or animal blood, all vampires drink it to sustain themselves.
The dragon has the head of horse, the tail of a serpent, large wings, four claws each with four giant talons, and wears a pearl around its neck where its power originates. The dragon has been seen in countless movies and novels such as The Never-ending Story by Michael Ende and Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Dragons, like vampires, have been portrayed in many different ways, from good beings that help the innocent to horrible creatures who imprison princesses. Dragons have become a huge phenomenon since the Eragon Series and Merlin TV show. For some reason, dragons are as much a part of mythical lore as are vampires.
The leviathan is sea serpent that has been immortalized by the widely popular video games of Final Fantasy. The leviathan is neither good nor evil; however upsetting the serpent can cause one’s demise. The leviathan resembles an enormous eel or snake; it has incredible speeds and can lift more than triple its weight.
#4. The Mirror People
The Mirror People are exactly like humans, only they have been trapped into an alternate reality forced to mirror our images due to their treachery. The reason these mythical people are on this list is because how awesome would it be to be able to punish treacherous people by making them mimic us!
The epitome of goodness, the unicorn is a horse-like creature with a horn on tops its head. Unicorns are white and according to popular television shows like Charmed, the dust from a Unicorn’s horn will bring good luck.
#6. LHA Mo
This mythical creature actually scares me. It is believed to be a horrible woman who wears the flayed skins of human victims. She also happens to be surrounded by large licking flames. She rides a mule and her saddle is made of her own son’s skin. She likes the taste of human flesh and blood and drinks from a human skull. I am one to admit that I am very glad this creature is nowhere near, where I am!
#7. The Balanders
The Balanders are shape-shifters who are able to change their form into any living being. They are on this list because it would be interesting if we were able to do such a thing.
Who doesn’t wish they had their own fairy to sing them beautiful music and grant them wishes. I know I do!
Valkyries are beautiful virgin women. They are armed in order to destroy any evil that comes near them. The Valkyries remind me of everyday women who stop at nothing to save their own children from harm.
Pygmies are twenty-seven inches tall and live in underground caves. They are known to harvest wheat and help those who are kind and respectful.
These are my personal favorite mythical creatures. Some that did not make the top ten but are definitely worth looking into are; oracles, furies, werewolves, banshees, brownies, doppelgangers, elves, gnomes, harpies, Humbaba, Lamia, and Satyrs. These creatures are both good and evil but have been made infamous in one part of the world or another.
