Hands down, the best pancake house in the country actually sits only three blocks away from my apartment in downtown Nashville, TN. It’s called The Pancake Pantry and it’s not just a pancake joint, its a landmark. It’s rare that you will not wait on a line that wraps around the block for at least forty five minutes before being seated. Ask anyone who has ever eaten there and they will tell you without hesitation that it’s worth every minute and then some.
Robert Baldwin opened the Pancake Pantry in 1961 and has kept it in the family for almost fifty years. The Pantry’s reputation just continues to rise. The concept has remained the same; stay faithful to offering great service and a menu of uncommonly good pancakes. The variety is as versatile as ever and there is truly something for everyone. Be sure to check out the kids menu for the little ones which include Bears in the Snow (bear shapes pancakes with powdered sugar and chocolate chips). Here are a handful of my favorite flavors and recipes.
Sweet Potato Pancakes
These griddle cakes are made from whole wheat and taste like homemade sweet potato pie. The touch of cinnamon brings it over the top. I recommend adding some whipped cream on top.
Banana Pineapple Triumph
The banana slices are rolled inside the pancake and drizzled with pineapple syrup. They add a decadent amount of powdered sugar and whipped cream. A sinful treat.
Cherry Supreme Crepes
These have a perfect union of sweet and tart flavors. The cakes are filled with cherries bursting with juicy goodness and dressed with a cherry compote. Cherry Supreme is also sprinkled with powdered sugar and whipped cream.
The unique treat here for me is the coconut, very exotic. Sliced bananas, chopped nuts and coconut are rolled inside the pancake. Simply sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Orange Walnut Pancakes
The Walnut pancakes are very robust and filling. The walnuts are packed atop with a snappy fresh orange syrup.
These are decadent because of the ricotta cheese. The mix of five different berries gives you a rich creamy, heavenly taste explosion. Whipped cream is added seal the deal of lusciousness.
If you find yourself in the Nashville area you must sample these perfect pancakes. If the line frightens you away at breakfast time, try choosing a lunch hour when the line tapers off a bit.
