It has been said that it does no good to wish or even pray that others would change. The only thing you can actually change is yourself. In particular, in order to change the world we must change what we pray for. When we pray we should both pray for something unselfishly and should pray for something we want. We should pray for something that we think that only the divine can render but it should be something we could do if only we put our minds to it. Think of prayer as a way of focusing and amplifying goals, thoughts, wishes, desires and intentions. If we make all of those things “good” by any objective standard and if we are all praying for “good” then the world will be transformed.
It is important to stay away from coercive thoughts, people and politics. No one should be forced to do anything against their will. Not even by prayer. Almost every mass political movement we can think of has at its core the notion that we will force someone to do something using the power of the government and guns. No one should pray for this. If whatever political movement we have been a part of ends up stating that to produce its central goals, law-abiding citizens should be forced to do, show or give something they don’t want to and that they should be fined, imprisoned or worse for not doing so, we are in the wrong political movement.
Pray instead for liberty and freedom. Individuals should be free to make their own choices and live their own lives as they see fit. Most of the political and environmental reasons people give for forcing law-abiding citizens to behave in a certain way at gunpoint have the use of force and guns as their true aim. The rationale given is quite frankly a convenient, trumped-up lie.
So what should we pray for? Three things: health, food and world peace. These are three things that human beings can and should be taking care of and three things that will still require divine intervention to bring about. We should first pray for the end of all sicknesses, diseases illnesses and ailments. Out of the three things we should pray for, health is the most achievable-the lowest hanging fruit. Also, all rational people of off faiths, even atheists, would like not to suffer and die of disease. It is unfortunate the politicians were allowed to get at our health. Politicians wind up inevitably talking about something they can control-a healthcare system. Rather than something we actually want and need-good health. A healthcare system keeps the body just healthy enough to be good vehicles for carrying and spreading diseases. A diseased populace is easier to control so no politician objects to maintaining sickness. Our prayers should be to get out of this whole paradigm. If here is no illness then we don’t have to waste money, time or effort on disease.
Once we have prayed away sicknesses, the next task is to pray away hunger and the final task to pray war into oblivion.
