The rattle is a common musical instrument that is used by Native American musicians. Along with their beautiful sound, the rattles are also very ornamental and can be used as home décor. Below you will find a kid friendly tutorial for making a Native American rattle.
2 Small Plastic cups
Roll of Packaging Tape
Beads (Blue, Red, Yellow)
Glue Sticks (for glue gun)
¼ cup of dried beans and rice mix
Step One – Fill one of the small plastic cups with the entire dried beans and uncooked rice mixture. Place the second plastic cup on top of the first cup so it covers the opening. If placed correctly, the tops of both cups will be facing each other.
Step Two – Secure the cups together by wrapping a long piece of packaging tape around the middle of the plastic cups where the two meet.
Step Three – Cut a section of twine that would be long enough to tie around the middle of the plastic cups (where you placed the packaging tape) and then wrap a few more times. Tie the twine around the middle once and then knot in place. Next you want to string the colored beads onto the twine and wrap it around the plastic cup. Tie a knot at the end of the twine to secure the strand in place.
Step Four – Finally, add the craft feathers around the top rim of the rattle. They can easily be adhered by putting a little hot glue where you want to place each craft feather. Allow the feathers to dry. Now your rattle is ready to make music!
