You’ve tried the sleeping pills and they either don’t work at all or leave you feeling logy the next day. Insomnia is nothing to cry over, but it sure is something to lose sleep over. Enough of that; insomnia doesn’t have to be a regular part of your lifestyle nor do the pharmaceutical companies’ profits. Move away from the OTC sleep aids and look to alternative means to get you a good night’s sleep.
One of the most reliable natural ways to battle insomnia is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that your body produces naturally to help regular your body clock and prepare you for the slumber that awaits you at the end of the day. Unless you are pregnant or breastfeeding or a woman considering impregnation, you can use melatonin in pill form to help bring on the Sandman. I personally use melatonin on nights that never end and can attest that most of the time melatonin does send me into the little death of nighttime sleep. The italics are there because, well, sometimes melatonin doesn’t work so well. Still, on average, it works better than an OTC sleep aid produced by Big Pharma.
Another way to get a good night sleep if you are suffering from extended bouts of insomnia isn’t so much an alternative medical treatment as it is an alternative lifestyle. Get into the habit of exercising at night. Exercise that is brutal enough to work up a sweat will generally combine with a hot shower afterward to make you restful enough to get at least a good five or six hours. You can even do your exercising as early as the late afternoon to take advantage of exercise’s ability to make you tired.
Relaxation and self-hypnosis are alternative routes you can try to get yourself pumped up for a night of rest. One good way to do the relaxation thing is to take a hot bath into which you have poured some tea tree oil or peppermint oil. Allow the aroma to wander into your nasal cavities while you close your eyes and attempt to meditate yourself into a stage of self-hypnosis. Leave all the stresses of the world behind like Tea Party candidates winning elections and the fact that the Kardashian family are famous not for hiding OJ’s bloody clothes but for, well, don’t even think about why on earth the Kardashian family is famous. It’s about you in that tub. It’s about you going to sleep. Rest those eyes. Relax those muscles. Breath in that calm and soothing aroma. Then head straight to bed.
Aromatherapy can play a part in the bath or it can be a cure for your insomnia all its own. Aromatherapists will tell you that an alternative treatment to sleeping pills lies in the magical properties of lavender. Lavender is a favorite among aromatherapists for relaxation as well as for getting read to sleep. Place a couple of chips of rock salt in a vial into which you drip a few drops of lavender oil. The salt is said to absorb the oil so that it won’t splash when the vial is opened. Remove the cap and inhale the scent of lavender just before you crawl into bed.
Or you could just tire yourself out by having sex.
