When you have “growing pains” or those agonizing tight cramping pains in your legs, you can feel each and every heartbeat in your legs, and they feel like lead. When the pain is too much to bear, and taking pain relievers just isn’t cutting it, try these simple home remedies to ease your pains.
There is no known cause for “growing pains” which typically begin in young age and can continue off and on for years. While vitamin deficiency may be to blame, often it’s just stressed leg muscles that react to overexertion when the body naturally relaxes at night and the limbs are still tense. Still, there are a few simple measures to ease muscle cramping, or “growing pains”.
Eat a banana. Often, leg cramps and “growing pains” are a sign of your body wanting potassium, and bananas are loaded with it. Eating a banana can ease even severe muscle leg cramps within just a few moments is a potassium deficiency is to blame.
If eating a banana isn’t working or you don’t have any bananas in the house, try running a warm bath or get out your sleeping bag, as warmth often is all your legs need to ease the cramping. Lie in a warm tub of water gently massaging the legs for 20 or 30 minutes until the pain begins to ease, and then when you climb into bed, which is normally when the pain begins (nighttime) wrap your legs burrito fashioned into a warm blanket or sleep in a sleeping bag to trap in the heat. This should help the muscles relax and the pain to disappear.
Drink a chamomile or peppermint tea, which relaxes the muscles and the mind to allow your tense muscles to release. Catnip tea is a mild sedative and relieves your leg pains as well.
If you still can’t relieve your “growing pains” or if they are accompanied by major headache or fatigue, consult your doctor to rule out a serious medical condition. Otherwise the painful and annoying “growing pains” should go away with a little relaxation.
