Welcome back! I appreciate your support in my battle against negativity and efforts to be more positive. Special thanks to those who have left me encouraging comments or promoted my work by sharing the link to this or one of the previous days’ articles. It’s time to share the lessons learned from day sixteen of my negativity diet. I hope you’re enjoying my journey to a more positive and optimistic life. If you missed Day 1, you can read all about it here and links to all the days in between can be found on my Associated Content profile.
Inspiration for Today
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3: 5-6 (NIV version of the Bible). This was one of the first Bible verses I ever memorized and I find it to be a comforting reminder to pray before acting or deciding. When I remember to do this things seem to go much better! Of course, the remembering is still a work in progress.
Spreading Optimism through Compliments
For years I’ve made a concerted effort to pay sincere compliments to my loved ones, make positive comments to service personnel when offered outstanding customer service and generally compliment anyone I thought deserved it, even if I didn’t know them. Today I thought, what about sincerely complimenting everyone with whom I interact long enough for it to seem natural? Surely I can find something to praise. Everyone has some positive quality and spreading optimism through compliments seemed like it was worth a try. Most people smiled or smiled even more upon receiving their compliments. One guy even puffed up like a peacock and his eyes lit up like a starving person’s might when offered a delicious meal. A couple ladies seemed embarrassed because they kind of looked downward and denied the compliment but I followed it up by explaining that it’s true; I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it. They don’t know me very well but both seemed more accepting after that. People that do know me well understand that I love giving out compliments but have this big thing about the truth. Therefore, I’m not going to bend the truth or lie to give a compliment. I want to build people up but I want to do it truthfully. Overall, I think this was a fun and worthwhile experiment within my whole negativity diet experiment. I like the idea of spreading joy and optimism through compliments.
Seeing Through Eyes of Love (In Practice)
In yesterday’s article (which you can read here) I introduced the idea of seeing through eyes of love. Today I had the opportunity to practice and, while I’m sure this gets even easier and better with practice, I have to say that I already love this technique. A loved one was very unhappy about something and was taking frustration out on me. I reminded myself of several things I adore about this person, pictured this person in a more loving situation from the past and prayed for this loved one. The anger was deflected (versus absorbed) and soon the loved one was calm and we were able to solve the dilemma together. What could have been a relationship stumbling block turned into a relationship builder.
Thank you for joining me on my journey to reduce negativity and increase optimism. I wish you abundant love, joy and positive thinking.
