Dust has been a problem for general households and also for electronics. For this reason scientist have come up with a new type of coating that could eliminate the problem of dust collection once and for all.
So, what is this new and exciting coating that scientists have come up with? Well, scientists that held a meeting at the American Chemical Society described what they believe to be the first self-cleaning coating which they will then use on the surface of solar panels to help to increase their efficiency of producing electricity from the sunlight. This new technology being introduced is also able to reduce the maintenance cost for all the large scale solar installations around the world. The new coating can be used in both small and large scale applications as of the moment and considering the different types of environments that current solar panels are put through, this could allow them to be used in many different locations.
This may not seem at first like a big deal in terms of changing the landscape of green energy, but the dust that accumulates on the solar panels decreases the amount of electricity that it is able to produce. The other major problem with this is that in places where dust and debris are likely to accumulate of solar panels, there are very few sources for the much needed clean water to clean the solar panels surface. With this new type of coating however the panels will clean themselves and companies will no longer have the expensive cost of maintaining the solar panels themselves. This will help to drive down the overall cost of producing solar energy and make it cheaper in the long run for the consumer.
This new surface coating will be electrically charged only when there is enough dust to warrant the cleaning so that no wasted electric is used. The coating itself is completely self sufficient and for this reason the average person will not have to worry about how to maintain their solar panels or pay for their special cleaning. This also allows people in harsh environments to have a better chance of purchasing their own solar panels for their roof or inside their home without deciding against it because they don’t understand how to clean and protect them. It may take some time before this becomes widely used, but when it does it will change how businesses and people alike make decision when deciding whether it is cost effective to buy solar panels.
