According to a recent news release from the Colorado Tourism Office, a number of new offerings and attractions are available for the 2010-11 ski season. There’s something for everyone, from new skiers to seasoned veterans including a new camp, a beginner half pipe, snow cat skiing, new terrain, and more lift capacity. Skiing and riding have also joined the social media age with a new system that allows you to share your ski and ride activity with your friends online.
New Beginner Half Pipe in Snowmass– Skiers and riders looking to learn the half pipe have a golden opportunity in Snowmass where they’ve built a 12-foot half pipe, ideal for beginners and intermediates. The new half pipe is located in LowDown Park on Snowmass for use during one of the longest ski seasons ever, due to the late Easter holiday. www.aspensnowmass.com
New Terrain on Durango Mountain – Durango Mountain Resort has more terrain this year at the front of the mountain. The new tree-skiing terrain is dubbed “The Ambassadors Glade” after owners Chuck and Sue Cobb, who were U.S. ambassadors for Iceland and Jamaica respectively. www.durangomountainresort.com
Backcountry Snow Cat Skiing– For fans of backcountry skiing, CS Irwin is a new operation offering snow cat skiing this winter in the Gunnison National Forest and on more than 1,000 acres of private property. The custom snow cats are outfitted with leather seats, large windows, flat-screen TV and a home theater. CS Irwin will average 8-12 runs per day from 9am to 4pm. www.csirwin.com
Skiing Becomes More Social– Vail Resorts launches a new online and mobile app for skiers and riders with EpicMix, a system that tracks lift rides, elevation and days on the mountain through RF tags embedded in the ski passes, and enables guests to share their activity with their friends online. Woodward Camp at Copper– Woodward is the world’s first indoor/outdoor ski and snowboard camp. Its indoor facility dubbed the ‘Woodward at Copper Barn’ is 20,000 sq. ft. of space filled with an array of training equipment for students to develop their skills. www.woodwardatcopper.com
More Lift Capacity at Silverton – Silverton Mountain is adding 50 percent more lift capacity for the 2010-11 ski season, with an additional 30 chairs to its single lift line. www.silvertonmountain.com
New Black Mountain Express at A-Basin– New to Arapahoe Basin for the 2010-11 ski season is a detachable quad chairlift called the Black Mountain Express. The new chairlift will have a capacity to accommodate 2,000 people per hour for a 3-minute trip up to mid-mountain.
