I have a friend from New York City who always complains about the lack of decent food available in San Francisco after 11 p.m. That used to be true. Aside from some diners, the late night crowd was limited to some scattered taquerias and the street vendors offering their bacon wrapped hot dogs. Fortunately, the Mission District has some recent additions that proudly announce “late night kitchen” in their windows.
I just tried Hog & Rocks, due to the recent heat wave. All I could think of eating was raw seafood, and after the fourth day of either sushi or seviche, I said, “Let’s go have some oysters.” Hog & Rocks is a ham and oyster bar that offers a variety of both. You’re given a little card listing oysters on one side, ham on the other. We had two of each and then repeated a couple of our favorites; one of the best ones was also the least expensive! The entree options are fresh and seasonal, and their drinks menu is also fun (I highly recommend their Pisco Sour). The waitress was so attentive and caring. As I asked to hold the simple syrup, she brought the drink to me with a tiny pitcher containing a bit of the sweet stuff in case I found it too tart. Hog & Rocks is at 3431 19th St., and is open from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; food is served until midnight.
Nearby, I bumped into Reaction (2183 Mission St.), a new Mexican/Spanish restaurant, open Monday to Thursday until midnight, and on weekends until 3 a.m. They offer Mexican street food beyond the usual taco. And they have Brazilian cuisine! They also offer desserts such as passion fruit or coconut mousse. We shared the coconut mousse with a chocolate fudge — a great way to end the night.
Now I can’t wait until Grub at Valencia and 19th Street finally opens; at least now they have a sign at the window that says “now accepting resumes.” They’re promising they’ll be open as late as 2:30 a.m.! This one will have lots of comfort food: a mac and cheese bar, plus customizable organic burgers and plenty of gourmet salads and veggie sides.
Now if only I can stay awake long enough to enjoy all of this late-night food.
