The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is a 300-acre site that includes the Battlefield, Hall of Valor Civil War Museum, and the historic Bushong Farm. It is a non-profit museum operated by the Virginia Military Institute.
Not only is the New Market Battlefield a Virginia State Historical Park, the venue is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
Virginia Military Institute’s association with this Battlefield is fitting and based in history. According to the website, The Hall of Valor in particular, honors the young VMI cadets who marched from Lexington, fought in the Battle of New Market and helped to win a victory for the Confederacy.
This close association continues. Each September as freshmen from traditional colleges undergo a boring series of orientation meetings about campus rules, the “rat” freshman class of VMI visit New Market Battlefield. There, they attend a daylong orientation to the 1864 battle, one in which their school played such a pivotal historic role.
The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park has a fee for entrance, although it is non-profit. According to the park website, a typical visitor spends 2 ½ to 3 hours at the museum and grounds, however, a purchased ticket is good for seven days and allows as many return visits as desired. The Park does not accept National or Virginia Park System passes.
As part of the experience, Joseph W. A. Whitehorne wrote a self-guided tour, The Battle of New Market, in the late 1980’s. This tour is included in the Park’s webpage and allows for a comprehensive tour and study of the battle. Following a briefing, Mr. Whitehorne leads the visitor to 12 different locations both by vehicle and by foot, with approximately 2 miles of walking within the Park. Boots are recommended if there have been recent rains and Mr. Whitehorne recommends field glasses to optimize the tour experience.
In addition to the Battlefield, the Museum and the Bushong Farmhouse provide additional background information about the culture of the time and of the Shenandoah Valley. The Battlefield Park website is sophisticated and includes casualty information, historic photographs, and links to important documents of the time.
