The Mimbres Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) in New Mexico produces excellent Petite Sirah, Sangiovese and Merlot wines, to name a few. Although this wine region only receives about nine inches of rain per year, the elevations above 4,000 to 6,000 feet provide deep, silty soils with excellent drainage, perfect for growing grapes (high elevations lead to hot days and cool nights, which allow the fruit to mature and build its sugars while retaining its acid.) Wine grapes have been grown here for over a century, with 2,000 of the 636,000 acres of this New Mexico AVA planted with grapes. Located near Deming and Silver City, New Mexico, there are several excellent wineries in this AVA that produce some outstanding wines, including Tempranillo, Mourvedre, and Cabernet Franc.
