A new study could provide new insight into how human blood vessels are formed and how those blood vessels could be repaired in the event of an accident. The new study which looks at how carbohydrate-binding protein and galectin-3 promotes angiogenesis, provides exciting new insight into how researchers and doctors could further help patients.
So, what did researchers find that has them excited? Well, researchers have discovered that when the human body needs to expand its blood vessels, the cells of the body release molecular signals that are known as growth factors which promote angiogenesis or simply the process which is needed for normal growth and development as well as wood healing and yet it could be harmful to the human body because it could help blood vessels supply tumors or other forms of disease tissue or even cause excessive blood vessel growth in humans. This new research suggests that the protein called galectin-3 is the promoter and that it could be the target for drugs that could prevent the process when it is not necessary.
The reason that such research has just came out is that it wasn’t until now that researchers understood how galectin-3 actually promoted the angiogenesis process itself. Now that researchers understand the process they can not only use it to increase the healing process but prevent it in areas where they want to starve out the problem. If there is a tumor on the brain and doctors want to remove it they will have to go in and perform surgery if the drugs are not effective enough it preventing or stopping the growth. In this way a patient will now be able to take medication and would no longer have to go through such a high risk surgery to save their life and at the same time it could help to prevent the formation of tumors and other problems before they even start in the human body.
While this new research doesn’t change things for now, it will allow doctors to help their patients better then ever before when the anti-angiogenesis drugs are actually widely produced for public use. This could also go a long way in scientists understanding why there is an over abundance of blood vessels in some humans and if there are too many blood vessels forming in an area they can then use these drugs to prevent the further formation and help protect the patient from further complications.
