Old Christmas cards and other holiday greetings are too good to just throw away, but they take up valuable storage space. They begin to accumulate and pile up very quickly. Instead of getting rid of them or storing every single card, try these new ways to use old holiday greetings. Christmas cards, Hanukkah greetings, and even those that do not fall under a holiday category can be reused and kept out of the recycling bin.
Make New Gift Tags from Cards
Old holiday cards can be used in creative ways to make unique new gift tags. Simply cut around the words, pictures, and designs, and leave room for personal sentiments. Punch a hole in each new gift tag, and tie them to gifts with narrow satin ribbon, stretchy gold or silver cord, or curling ribbon. For something even more decorative and unique, cut around the pictures and text with decorative-edged scissors. Cover letters and portions of pictures with clear drying glue, and sprinkle on eye-catching glitter. What used to be old holiday cards will turn into brand new gift tags that look better than expensive store-bought varieties.
Use Old Holiday Cards for Gift Decorations
Cut graphics and text from old holiday cards and use the cutouts to decorate new holiday gifts. Decorate the cutouts with a little glitter, or add tiny faux gems where appropriate. Attach the decorations made from holiday cards using double-sided tape, or roll up little pieces of clear tape commonly used for wrapping. Best of all, gift recipients can reuse the decorations. Chances are they will not even know they were made from old holiday cards.
Make New Cards from Old Ones
Most people do not write on both sections of the inside of holiday cards. Why not reuse the most decorative sides of cards instead of tossing them into the trash? Separate the front from the back using a pair of sharp scissors. Fold a piece of cardstock in half, and glue the recycled card to the piece of cardstock using clear-drying craft glue. Cover the seam with a piece of color-coordinating ribbon. This is a great way to make old holiday cards brand new again and use something that would otherwise end up in the garbage or the recycling bin.
