If you want to ring in the New Year in style there is no need to go to Seattle to have a great time. If you want to stay close to home, Tacoma has a wonderful option for you with First Night. Located in the downtown theater district, First Night has entertainment and activities for the whole family.
How It Works
To gain entry to the many different venues occurring throughout the day and evening you will need to purchase a first night button. These buttons are available at the following locations:
• Leroy Jewelers, located at 940 Broadway – 253-272-3377
• Sanford and Son Antiques and Auctions – located at 743 Broadway – 253-272-0334
• Custom Shirt Shop – located at 5211-C South Washington – 253-474-8092
Advance purchase pricing is $5 for children and $10 for adults, with a special family price of $30 for a family of up to six (two adults, four children). Buttons purchased on December 31st are $7 for children, $12 for adults, and a family price of $38.
The buttons will give you access to all of the stage shows and also free admission to the many museums that Tacoma has to offer, including the Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum, The Washington State History Museum, and the Tacoma Children’s Museum.
Events start at 6:30pm and last until midnight. The night is kicked off with the Last Mile at First Night run/walk that starts off the First Night parade. Festivities continue at the various venues throughout the theater district. Venues include the Main Stage off of Broadway between 9th and 11th St and the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. A full listing of venues is available here.
Special Family Friendly Activities
The museums are a great place to take your children during the day on December 31st. Your First Night button gets you admission into the museums, which generally are going to be closing at 5pm. The Children’s Museum will stay open until 7pm, and will have a few special activities for the younger set such as an hourly New Year’s countdown and special New Year’s related crafts.
First Night is billed as a family friendly event, no alcohol is allowed. If you are looking for somewhere to get a bit tipsy, this is not that place.
Parking is free at the Tacoma Dome Station Garage, and the free Tacoma LINK light rail is running until 1:30am to transport you to and from the events.
Programs and a schedule of events will be available soon on the official First Night website, check often for updates and information.
