Many New Yorkers escape the city to get away from it all; the Catskills, the East End, or even Westchester or Connecticut can seem like a break when set against the backdrop of the city that never sleeps. For my bottom dollar though I’d much rather spend my time off enjoying all that the City has to offer. There are a variety of options for every budget and for every individual’s consideration of just what is romantic. Here are three of my favorite spots to go to get away without going away.
Sugar Hill Harlem Inn (460 West 141st St New York, NY 10031. 917-464-3528) Admittedly one of my favorite spots to go in Manhattan is a place I’ve been to recently, the Sugar Hill Harlem Inn. Set in a wonderful Victorian home in the historic Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem, the Sugar Hill Harlem Inn really has a lot of things going for it. Characterized more as a bed and breakfast the Sugar Hill Harlem Inn has rooms, each equipped with their own bathroom, and every room is striking down to the final detail. The dressings on the beds are authentic, the colors on the walls are warm and inviting, and the breakfast the next morning is an added bonus. Moreover Harlem is changing and the Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is poised to keep up with and help shape the contours of this ever expanding neighborhood.
Central Park Hostel (19 W 103rd Street New York, NY 10025. 212-678-0491) If you are trying to get away in New York City, it’s going to cost a lot of money. If you don’t have a lot of money, don’t want to spend a lot of money on the place that you’re sleeping or you romanticize the company of strangers, the Central Park Hostel may be the place for you. You can stay at this place cheap! If you’re willing to sleep in an 8 twin bed, bedroom you can save a bundle. For slightly more you can get a private room which is fine too. When we came to New York City for my birthday this year (before we’d moved back) I requested we spend an evening at Central Park Hostel. My wife agreed what with it being my birthday and all and even she admitted that Central Park Hostel wasn’t that bad. One of the nicest things about that trip was the stroll we took through Central Park early the next morning, walking hand in hand and breathing in the early spring chill of the early morning air. It was lovely.
Marriott Marquis (1535 Broadway New York NY 10036. 212-398-1900) One final place you can go and spend a lot of money is the Marriott Marquis. This was a place I used to stay in when I had no concept of what money actually meant. I would just spend and spend and spend. I still go to the 8th floor atrium of Marriott Marquis all the time; it’s a wonderful spot to put up the old feet, use the bathroom, or just get away from all the people for a minute. I’ve got a gallery of pictures of the Marriott Marquis HERE (4). Of course the romance of this larger than life hotel is its location. It’s got a really fast elevator which is cool to just ride up and down, from this 8th floor lobby area you can look all the way up to the top which is pretty cool. Marriott Marquis also has a top floor restaurant which is rotating. It’s called “The View.” You don’t know how many times I hear people point to that and say, “Where’s Whoopi?” It’s not The View the TV show! It’s the restaurant!
Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in culture, immerse yourself in history, or immerse yourself in the moment, New York City is one of the most romantic spots you can go for a weekend away. Consider one of these three hotels for three totally different weekend experiences in Manhattan. Better yet, consider all three!
