The New York Jets will go for the sweep of the New England Patriots in Foxboro December 6th in this classic AFC East confrontation. The New York Jets and the New England Patriots will both be well rested after winning their respective Thanksgiving Day games. This Monday Night Football game will be the equivalent of a heavyweight fight and will be the game of the week.
The New York Jets made short work of the Cincinnati Bengals winning the game 26-10 in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate. The New England Patriots had to fend off the hungry Detroit Lions before finally pulling away late in a game that was closer than their score indicated.
New York Jets Defense vs New England Patriots Offense
Defense has won several games for the New York Jets and this could be yet another. On the ground the New York Jets are clogging up the line and holding teams to only 90 yards per game. The New York Jets are one of the better pass defenses in the NFL and they are allowing 220 yards from opposing quarterbacks.
Darrelle Revis appears to have lost a step but it is not noticeable. On the other side of the field for the New York Jets there is a weak spot that is due to inconsistent play by Antonio Cromartie and rookie Kyle Wilson. A quarterback the caliber of Tom Brady should be able to take advantage of this better than he did in the first game between these two earlier in the season.
Tom Brady is one of a handful of NFL quarterbacks that is an extra coach on the field. The New England Patriots offense is an ever evolving unit that does not live or die with one player. This is why it was so easy to depart with Randy Moss.
Moss has shown in his last two moves that he may be done as a quality number one receiver. Brady is not the type of quarterback that plays well when he has to find one specific receiver and now we are seeing how good he can be spreading the ball around.
One issue with the New England Patriots offense is the lack of a decent running game. Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis has been decent in the role of the number one back but the team as a whole is only averaging 112 yards per game on the ground. The passing numbers are not much better with Brady only averaging 226 yards per game through the air. The New England Patriots offense has a slight edge over the New York Jets defense.
New England Patriots Defense vs New York Jets Offense
To say the New England Patriots pass defense is weak is an understatement. They are yielding 290 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks and with Mark Sanchez coming up for Monday Night Football they will not want to let him break 200 yards per game. The New England Patriots run defense is better than average only allowing 108 yards per game and this could be a critical point of contention in this game.
Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets offense have played better than last season but are they a good overall offense? Santonio Holmes has won at least two games with clutch plays and excellent yardage after the catch. Aside from Holmes, the running back combination of LaDanian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene have been averaging 145 yards per game on the ground.
The running backs will be the key. LaDanian Tomlinson has been solid this season but appears to be the second back as the season wears on. This will be where this game is won or lost. If the New York Jets can establish the run they will win this game. The New York Jets offense holds a slight edge over the New England Patriots defense.
