Monday morning has brought more panic and destruction to an already ravaged area in New Zealand. In a report by MSNBC, aftershocks continued through Monday following this country’s most destructive earthquake in 80 years. On Friday a massive 7.0 earthquake struck in a south island of New Zealand at 11:35 a.m. EST causing widespread destruction and yet it was a miracle no one died. The powerful earthquake caused damage and destruction to power and buildings. Aftershocks have continued to frighten an already devastated region.
What is disturbing is the fact that seismologists are astonished that there was even an active fault in that area. Although New Zealand is no stranger to an earthquake and it’s aftershocks, the location of this massive earthquake has surprised many in the earth sciences field.
According to GNS Science there are approximately 14,000 earthquakes, along with their aftershocks, in New Zealand each year and 100-150 are strong enough to be felt. They also explain that two tectonic plates are constantly grinding together underneath New Zealand, helping to create an earthquake such as those that have already hit the region.
Although it’s a miracle that no deaths have been reported, the earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks have knocked out an area that supports an economy that relies on agriculture in the region where the quake and aftershocks have hit.
It is truly a miracle that no one has died from this massive quake that has struck Christchurch, New Zealand or from the more than 100 aftershocks.
Updates on the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and the damage from the quake and aftershocks will be provided as information is collected and shared.
