Number 77 in the NFL Network’s “Top 100” is running back Tony Dorsett. He was picked 37th by the fans and in my opinion that is closer to where he ought to be.
Tony Dorsett was drafted second in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys. He was a four-time All-American at the University of Pittsburgh as well as a Heisman Trophy winner.
Dorsett was a star all the way through his career with the Cowboys that spanned 11 seasons after which he played one season for the Denver Broncos before retiring. He played in 173 games.
Tony Dorsett retired with 12,739 rushing yards and had 398 receptions for 3,554 passing yards. That equaled 16,347 combined yards. He got one Super Bowl win.
Tony Dorsett was put into the Hall of Fame in 1994.
Number 76 on the NFL “Greatest Players’ List” is Art Shell. Shell was drafted in the third round as the 80th pick in 1968 by the Oakland Raiders to become the Los Angeles Raiders. Shell won his starting spot after a couple of years. He was an offensive tackle that was a great pass blocker and great pulling downfield blocker. He often teamed up with Gene Upshaw to form a deadly offensive duo. Art Shell was the unequivocal “team player.”
He played for 15 seasons in 207 games and two Super Bowls that the Raiders won (XI and XV).
A very mild-mannered class act Art Shell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989. He was picked 90th by fans probably because he was an older offensive tackle.
Number 75 on the “Top 100” list was Darrell Green who was drafted by the Washington Redskins out of Texas A&I in 1983 in the first round as a defensive back and punt returner. He was for a long time considered the fastest man in the NFL even as he aged. Green had a stellar and extremely long career playing 295 games over 20 seasons.
Amazingly Darrell Green had an interception for a record 19 straight years and a club record 54 interceptions.
Darrell Green was in seven Pro-Bowls and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008. His fan ranking was 58th.
