Roger Staubach is the 46th player listed on the NFL Network’s “Top 100.” “Roger the Dodger,” or “Captain Comeback,” was some player. He was drafted from the Naval Academy in 1964 as the 129th pick of the 10th round. He had to serve four years of active duty, including a year in Vietnam. Staubach played 16 years and during that time he played in 131 games. Staubach brought a lot of class to the NFL at a time when some was being usurped.
Staubach was the Heisman Trophy Winner and was also associated with the “Hail Mary” pass. He led the Cowboys to four NFL Titles and two Super Bowl wins. During his career, he passed for 22,700 yards and 153 touchdowns, but added to that 2,264 yards rushing with an additional 20 touchdowns.
Staubach was taken into the Hall of fame in 1985 and had a fan ranking of 30.
Staubach was often compared with “Broadway” Joe Namath and was considered the “square” to Namath’s man-about-town. This prompted Staubach to say on a television show that he enjoyed sex just as much as Joe Namath, but “just with the same girl.”
Tony Gonzalez has the exact same fan ranking and NFL Network ranking at Number 45. Gonzalez was drafted in 1997 by the Kansas City Chiefs out of Ohio State in the first round as the 13th overall pick. He is a tight end. Still an active player, Gonzalez has already played 13 seasons, and in those 13 seasons he has played 206 games.
Gonzalez was also an Academic All-American. He has everything going for him: athletic skills, looks and brains.
Tony Gonzalez is now with the Atlanta Falcons and is looking to win that Super Bowl. In fact, he is looking to win his first playoff game.
So far this year, the Atlanta falcons are 5-2, and one of those losses was in overtime. They can look to postseason, I think. Tony Gonzalez may just have been the link they needed.
Recently, Gonzalez has adopted a non-meat diet, and it has made him extremely healthy. In fact, he has posed along with his wife against killing animals.
He is a great player who will be in the Hall of Fame one day.
