The NFL power rankings Week 5 are like any other this year. Basically, the NFL power rankings prior to Week 5 have no clear cut No. 1 team. Like in the past several weeks, it seems no team wants to be No. 1, or it leaves a lot of question marks even when they win. This weekend was the most glaring example yet, as the ideal Chiefs became the only unbeaten squad left, a few one-loss franchises were lucky to escape, and others weren’t so lucky. Therefore, this week’s rankings are incredibly fragile.
The Steelers were a clear-cut No. 1 before Sunday, and were very close to staying that way against the Ravens. However, a Baltimore comeback put the Ravens in contention for the top spot – especially since few other teams made as big a statement.
Forming the NFL power rankings Week 5 is very difficult, given that the Saints, Packers and Falcons nearly lost to winless teams, the Bears were pounded, the Colts were upset, and the Chiefs have the best record in football.
At this point, it does seem like the AFC has the more solid leaders, as the Ravens, Steelers, Jets, Patriots and Texans are a solid 3-1, the Chiefs remain at 3-0, and the 2-2 Colts and Chargers are due to break out.
Meanwhile in the NFC, two divisions are led by 2-2 teams, while the Saints and Packers have been iffy lately, and the Falcons, Bears, Cowboys and Vikings are questionable. No matter who is put up on top of the heap, it will come with a lot of question marks.
Can the Saints get their firepower back? Do the Ravens and Jets have enough of it? Will the Steelers maintain momentum when Ben Roethlisberger and a tougher schedule arrive? Are the Chiefs, Texans, Bears and Falcons for real? Are the Colts and Chargers still their old selves? Can the Patriots make one more run?
This is certainly set to be the most chaotic season in a very long time, especially for those who form power rankings. Week 5 likely won’t make things any easier, as the Chiefs visit the Colts, the Jets take on the Vikings, the Packers face the Redskins, and the Ravens host the Broncos.
For the moment, here is the very tentative NFL top 12:
1. Ravens: 3-1
2. Steelers: 3-1
3. Jets: 3-1
4. Saints: 3-1
5. Packers: 3-1
6. Chiefs: 3-0
7. Patriots: 3-1
8. Falcons: 3-1
9. Texans: 3-1
10. Colts: 2-2
11. Bears: 3-1
12. Chargers: 2-2
