The seventh generation of video game consoles is one of the most unusual. I have been playing video games all the way back to the Atari days. I fell in love with the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo, and yet I wasn’t that impressed with the Nintendo 64. Although I thought the Gamecube had potential, I felt it was easily overshadowed by the X-box and Playstation 2. So no one was more surprised than I when the Wii took the world by storm.
The Wii, which is by far the weakest system out there, is the market leader this time around. If you are like me, and consider yourself a hard core gamer, you may have not given the way a chance. And yet, you really should. The Wii has some wonderful games. One of my favorite games in the last ten years is New Super Mario Bros. Twilight Princess is a wonderful game, with a lot to do in it. My kids can’t get enough of Wii Resort. Not to mention that the Wii can play all Gamecube games, unlike the other two consoles from this generation.
However, it’s not just the discs that make this console worthwhile. Although the Virtual Console has sadly been almost forgotten by Nintendo recently, it is home to many great games. Thanks to it, I can play Nintendo games, Super Nintendo games, Sega, and many other consoles. I plan on finally beating Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past one day. My wife loves playing old Nintendo puzzle games. Meanwhile, most of the download space on the WIi has been supplemented by WiiWare games. These are games designed specifically for the Wii. My favorite I am ashamed to say is Tetris Party. I love playing Tetris on the balance board. It is great, although I must confess there is no way to look cool while playing it.
If that was all the Wii had to offer though, I would say you probably would be better off getting an X-Box 360 or Playstation 3. The Wii can play Netflix, which is great, but this is to be expected of this generation of games. You can also play games online for free, which is much better than having to join a pay service. Still, one of the best things about the Wii is the fact that it can also double as your web browser. It runs on Wi-Fi, unlike the X-box 360, which requires a wired connection or the purchase of a pricey plug-in to detect Wi-Fi. Using your Wi-Fi connection, you can download the Opera browser, which is actually a passable browser. Now, I can surf the web on my wonderful big screen plasma TV.
Finally, though, the best part of the console is the motion control. A lot has been said about Wii’s motion control not being accurate enough. Wii produced the “motion plus” attachment, to help deal with it. Still people complain. However, the people have spoken and the Wii is the best selling console currently. To go a step further, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the Wii has been flattered a great deal. Playstation 3 just unleashed their “Playstation Move” controller, which looks amazingly similar to the “Wiimote.” Microsoft is also gearing up for their upcoming “Kinect.” Although it eschews the controller concept altogether, it is based around using your movements to move your character, which seems very similar to the Wii Fit balance board.
Wii is currently the biggest console out there. It has made Nintendo a ton of money, and although it has slacked off in sales, it still sales very well. Although it is definitely weaker than the other two consoles out there, you should definitely give it a chance, if you haven’t. Meanwhile, I plan on sticking with Nintendo Power!
