The NY Daily News ran a news report at the end of 2009 that headlined, “Mermaid fever sweeps Israel beach town of Kiryat Yam as many report sightings of the fabled creature.”
In fact, so many folks were witnessing the mermaid sightings in the town Kiryat Yam, Israel that a $1 million reward was offered by the Town Council to anyone who could actually catch the mermaids on film or video.
To date, no one has been able to lay claim to the million bucks.
Mermaids. The mere mention of the word brings a smile to a child’s face. In Weeki Wachi Springs, Florida there is a State Park that lays claims as “The Only City Of Live Mermaids!”
They aren’t offering any million dollar rewards because millions have already come to Weeki Wachi to see the mermaids perform since it opened in the 1940’s.
What exactly is a mermaid?
There are several definitions available that essentially describe the same thing:
A mermaid is a mythological aquatic creature with a female human head and torso and the tail of a fish
In other words, half a woman and half a fish and living in the sea.
I imagine that the attractiveness of a mermaid would be substantially less if the top half of the mermaid were the fish part and the bottom half represented human legs. Then again, it wouldn’t be nearly as ergonomically efficient if it didn’t have a tail.
So, is it possible that mermaids exist? Can all of the folks in Krvat Yam be under the Mermaid Spell or taking the same hallucinogenic drugs? Is it just a marketing ploy to increase tourism in Israel with the lure of winning a million bucks? Who knows.
If you would like to see a mermaid or many mermaids in action, check out the Weeki Wachi Shows if you get to Florida and watch them in action. You can visit the website here.
Or if you would like to go to Israel and purchase a villa near the shores where the mermaids have been sighted, you can go here and for about $350,000 dollars you can purchase a home for yourself and the mermaids. That is, if they do exist.
Frankly, I don’t think either the eye witnesses or the mermaids have a leg to stand on.
