Hair accessories for teens and girls aren’t really expensive but that’s no excuse for going out and buying them! Especially when you can make the cutest hair scrunchies for holding ponytails, pigtails or a bun with little effort. Depending upon the materials you use there are many different designs you can create. Make these for a daughter or other girl or let her make them herself. Since the hair scrunchies are a no-sew craft she’ll have no problem making the ponytail scrunchies.
Purchase regular ponytail ties to make the scrunchies. Large ponytail ties work best; purchase ones that are small in diameter rather. You’ll also need some scraps of knit fabric. The material should be a stretchy knit that’s not real thick. You’ll need a quarter-yard of two different colors of the knit.
Cut the two colors of fabric into strips that are each ¾” wide and 61/2″ long. You’ll need 20 strips of each color. Begin tying each piece onto the elastic ponytail tie. Position the strip so that the tie lies in the center of it. Tie the strip once around the ponytail tie and pull it tight. Beside that one, tie on another, this time in the alternate color. Continue tying on first one color, and then the other, until the band is completely covered with the knit strips. Just when you think you’re finished, stretch the ponytail tie as far as you can, then check to see if you can squeeze a couple more strips onto it.
The fluffy, knotted hair scrunchies can be made in many different ways. For example, use pieces of ribbon instead of knit fabric to make a satiny hair scrunchy. Cut the ribbons at the ends so that they’re pointed and the scrunchy will look different than the uncut ribbon pieces. Cut the knit strips with pinking shears and the finished scrunchy will look even more unique than one made from strips cut with regular scissors.
Choices for making assorted scrunchies include strips of lace, pieces of yarn, felt strips and even non-stretch material. If the girl can tie knots she can make all sorts of scrunchies that are all the same color or alternating colors. That makes it easy to create a large assortment of hair scrunchies to coordinate with any of her outfits!
