In San Francisco, we are often given the opportunities to have something in public that is absolutely amazing. If you have not looked at the new plans for the Eastern Neighborhoods Area, prepare to be amazed.
Although it is not completely obvious at first, when you start to read the sides of the design pictures, you realize there’s a lot more going on than first indicated. I was really impressed by the part that looks like a maze. I was trying to figure out why they were going to make a maze when I saw that the maze was actually individual community plots used as ornamentation.
I thought that it was a fantastic way to do community gardening and also put veggies on display as a park beautification feature. I have often wondered why vegetable gardens were not featured more in parks instead of trees, flowers, and bushes. However, I cannot wait to visit the park when it is opened and see what people decide to grow as vegetables.
Honestly, I have never seen anything like this before. They have fences that are made out of trees. They also have children’s playground equipment that irrigates the gardens. I must give my hat’s off to the design team and community organizing involved in this project.
It’s amazing to see what can happen in Noe Valley when the right heads are working together. In addition to visiting the new garden’s plans, be sure to find ways that you can volunteer.
