Many authentic Thai recipes include fresh ingredients that are combined with herbs and spices to create flavor. However, as with any culture, there are some unhealthy options that people find irresistible. Here are six dishes that, generally, are more fattening than meets the eye.
#1: Pad Thai
This is probably the most popular, well-known of Thai dishes. What makes it unhealthy is the use of noodles and peanuts. The noodles are usually stir-fried in oil, and that makes it a heavy, saturated dish. And, peanuts are packed with protein…if you only eat a few. But, pad thai has more than a few, and that translates into fat for your body.
#2: Thai Curry
Curry dishes would not be that bad for you, if not for the fact that they use coconut milk. There are lighter versions of coconut milk, but that’s most likely not the kind that you’ll find in Thai curry dishes. Coconut milk has a high oil and sugar content.
#3: Deep -Fried Fish
It doesn’t take much effort to explain why this is a problem. Deep-fried anything is not good for you, especially if sweet and sour sauce is provided for dipping. The batter used for frying Thai foods is usually quite thick and absorbs a lot of oil. And, the sweet and sour sauce utilizes a lot of sugar.
#4: Bean Thread (a.k.a. Cellophane noodles)
Yes, these translucent noodles seem harmless. But, they are made of starch and water, which gives them bad marks for being carbohydrates. If you order them stir-fried, they soak up every bit of what’s put on them, including oil. Not good.
#5: Spring Rolls
The stuff inside of these crunchy goodies isn’t that bad for you. But, again, the problem lies in the fact that they are deep fried. The wrappers consume the oil, leaving you with mouthfuls of saturated fat.
This dish consists of skewered meats that have been marinated and grilled. That’s fine, right? But, satay is usually served with a peanut sauce. And, that is the issue. As mentioned above, peanuts in moderation are good for you. But, peanut sauce is predominantly peanut butter, sugar, and a few other ingredients. The high calories and high fat content of this sauce make this dish an unhealthy one.
It doesn’t hurt to have these dishes every once in a while. But, consistently eating foods that are high in fat, carbohydrates, and calories can pose health risks for you later on. Know the menu before you go, and don’t be afraid to ask for substitutes.
