The beauty of Mother Nature is calling you to experience November in the Poconos. The start of the holiday season begins mid November with fun events happening for old and young alike. This is a marvelous time of year to come and stay for a weekend or visit for a day. Here in the Poconos we have the natural beauty of the mountains and the magic of Christmas that reaches into the hearts of everyone during this time of year.
Christmas City USA
Bethlehem Pa. is one of the most beautiful and historical places to experience November in the Poconos. Nicknamed Christmas City USA, people from all over the United States come to see the wonder of Bethlehem’s holiday decorations. You can view the streets of the beautifully preserved 18th century Germanic style buildings dressed up in their holiday finest by a horse drawn carriage ride, walking tour, or driving in your car.
The start of the holiday season in Bethlehem Pa. is November 13th, 2010. On this day the merchants unveil their unique Christmas displays with the dancers from the Pennsylvania Youth Ballet performing “The Nutcracker” live in the storefront windows.
November 26th 2010, is the official Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony held at Payrow Plaza in Bethlehem Pa. The 26th is also the day the city will illuminate the holiday lights that adorn every light post and city street, the activities conclude with the arrival of non other than Santa Claus.
When my son was little, we would always take the Horse Drawn Carriage ride through Bethlehem to experience November in the Poconos. What a wonderful feeling, getting all cozy and warm under a blanket as you take a carriage ride through the city to view all of the twinkling Christmas lights. We always stopped to see the “Official Christmas Tree” and visit Santa Claus before heading home with smiles on our faces and the warmth of the Christmas spirit in our hearts.
Shawnee Inn Traditional Tree Lighting
The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort has their traditional tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, November 28th, 2010 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The evening starts with cuddling around the campfire and sipping hot chocolate, followed by a reading of “The Grinch”. When the carolers start making their rounds at 6 p.m. you know that it is almost time for the holiday lights at Shawnee Inn to twinkle for the first time of the season. The look on our sons’ face was always as bright as the thousands of white lights that adorned the main entrance of the Shawnee Inn when we would experience this part of November in the Poconos.
The Shawnee Playhouse has two main shows during the holidays. The first, is the heartfelt musical version of the film “It’s a Wonderful Life”. This classic tale of a desperate man, who with the help of an angel, realizes the true value of his life, is a wonderful show for both children and adults.
