Unless you are a fan of fundamentalist nutbags on youtube, you probably haven’t heard of Justin Hughes. His controversial take on everything from catholicism to feminism, however, is getting some attention. Hughes resides in the U.K where he does podcasts and makes youtube videos under the name “brojustin” expressing his views about “real Christianity.” Essentially, Hughes is the U.K’s answer to America’s Fred Phelps, although interestingly enough the former has been critical of the latter, although both are completely insane. Considering his handful of page views and clear insanity, this fundie nut wouldn’t be worth talking about if it were not for a few important comments.
The prince of perverts, the Anti-Christ, his prancing putrescence, all are names Hughes uses in his videos to refer to the Pope. Personally I am no fan of the Pope, I’ve had work banned from this site for being overly critical of the Church, however, while I strongly support free speech and questioning of religion, I do not support calls for violence. This is where “brojustin’s” commentary becomes concerning. In one video, Hughes calls for citizens to “stone the Pope.” Furthermore, in another video, “brojustin” states “perhaps we should pray that god will raise up some maniac to shoot the Pope.” Regardless of views on Catholicism, the encouragement of violence and murder should not be condoned by civilized society.
In a rant about modern religions and modern preachers not being “real Christians” Hughes says that President Barack Obama is a “wicked and depraved pagan savage.” Again, I am not a fan of Obama, however, statements like this help no one. To express issues with a political leader is not only an example of free speech, but it is a fundamentally important part of change. Statements of hate, however, do not inspire change, but rather create more hate.
Gays, Women, and everyone else:
First off, good old crazy “brojustin” refers to homosexual men as “G.A.Y.S: Gross Anus Yearning Sodomites.” I’ve always thought it was interesting that the supposedly heterosexual fundamentalists like this spend so much time thinking about and talking about gay sex. I suspect that someone is protesting too much. According to Hughes, gays are the sodomite troops of Satan. Unlike the WBC, This particular crazy person doesn’t save all his irrational hatred for gays. According to one especially long rant on homosexuality, celebrities will burn the same as gays, and women who dare to take political office or any other position that places them on the same level as men will meet the same fate.
The fact is that Mr. Hughes is an ignorant and angry man with a camera and a hobby of expressing fascist ideas on the internet. We could argue that there’s no point in talking about a crazy old man with a webcam, we could argue that he and his statements are irrelevant, but there was a time when Hitler was just a guy with a notebook.
