The Ohio State University football team opened their one hundred and twenty-first year with a 45-7 victory against the Thundering Herd of Marshall. Ranked second nationally, Ohio State established their dominance against the visiting green and white Marshall. Few first game jitters plagued the Buckeyes as they proved that they should be in contention for the National Championship game.
Ohio State’s special teams immediately forced a Marshall fumble on the kick off return. Andre Booker had the ball knocked out and the Buckeyes recovered at the Marshall 22 yard line. Ohio State’s opening drive only needed four plays to find the end zone. Junior quarterback Terrelle Pyror found DeVier Posey in the end zone for Ohio State’s first points of the season.
Marshall was not as fortunate on their first offensive drive. Notorious for defensive power, Jim Tressel’s defense forced a three and out series. Quarterback Brian Anderson was having communication issues with his receivers and struggled with completing successful passes.
Ohio State remained confident and dangerous throughout all four quarters. Pyror had plenty of time to find receivers thanks to an offensive line who possessed a commanding control. Sanzenbacher had a steller night., finishing with 113 yards receiving and one touch down. He is an impressive receiver–one that is able to make plays happen as well as strive for extra yardage. DeVier Posey is a receiver who is capable of making sensational plays. Look for this Cincinnati native to wow football fans with his athletic ability. Posey’s contributions to a winning Ohio State team will most likely elevate mid-season.
Brandon Saine was more than impressive as running back. His 103 yard two touchdowns performance decreased the need for Pyror to run the ball. Although he was rarely pressured, Pyror looked very comfortable in the pocket.. If Saine and Jaamal Barry can continue to run the ball well , Ohio State’s passing offense will open up enabling Pyror to run successful draw or rollout plays.
Marshall’s only memorable moment of the evening was a blocked field goal that was returned by Ahmed Shakoor 45 yards for a touchdown. The defense of Ohio State limited the Thundering Herd to only 198 total yards offense. Marshall will play West Virginia on Friday..
Ohio State’s number two ranking will be tested next week against Miami. It will be the first time the two teams have played each other since Ohio State’s defeated Miami in the 2002 National Championship Fiesta Bowl.
