If you’ve ever wondered what .007 was actually packing, now may be your chance to find out. An oil painting of Sean Connery nude at the age of twenty-one was recently discovered in the home of a former art teacher. Rab Webster, who taught art at Selkirk High School in the Scottish Borders, once when a student at Edinburgh College of Art, had occasion to paint the actor.
The year was 1951 and young Sean Connery, still 11 years away from starring as James Bond, was working as a nude model for Edinburgh College students. Rab Webster was there to capture the moment on canvas.
Nick Bihel, the husband of Webster’s niece Heather, said that the family found the painting last month after the death of Mr. Webster. “The oil painting was part of a whole load of paintings just stacked on top of each other in a studio he used as a dark room,” said Bihel.
Webster had spoken to the family of his remembrances of painting Sean Connery nude. “He said Connery treated it just as a job and that he didn’t say very much,” said Bihel, according to Telegraph.co.uk. “The oil painting was part of a whole load of paintings just stacked on top of each other in a studio he used as a dark room. He never sold or exhibited any of his paintings, but it is pretty obvious he was a very talented artist.”
Bihel added, “There were a few sketches of Sean Connery which are distributed among the family so to speak.”
The painting is perhaps exactly the type of portrait that James Bond would actually have hanging in his love nest.
Mr. Webster’s hidden collection will soon be displayed in an exhibition in the UK. According to Dailymail.co.uk, the nude portrait of Sean Connery, as well as some 50 other paintings, painted by Webster between 1945 and 1967, will be exhibited. Some of the paintings will be sold, says the family.
Sean Connery was born August 25, 1930 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. He first starred as James Bond in 1962 in Dr. No. He played the British secret agent in six more films from the James Bond Franchise. His 007 catalog included Dr. No in 1962, From Russia with Love in 1963, Goldfinger in 1964, Thunderball in 1965, You Only Live Twice in 1967, Diamonds Are Forever in 1971, and Never Say Never Again in 1983.
