The little yellow house at 178 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens is now completely rebuilt and actually blends in with its surroundings. The house used to stick out like a sore thumb–yellow siding on a house that was visibly not level with either of it’s neighbors, simultaneously both an eyesore and a wonder. It was such an oddity, it kind of grew on us. Bizarre and out-of-place, somewhat like St. Nicholas Church near the towers (though on a completely different scale).
However, the little yellow building that couldn’t, suffered a terrible fire in November of 2009. Since that time the building has been developed and refashioned into quite a neighborly looking establishment. it is complete with red brick siding that blends in with its environs. The new brick facade made it ‘stick-in’ with its neighbors.
Very happy to see the space rebuilt and looking so fabulous. No word yet on what will occupy the newly revamped building. But hopefully it is something remarkable.
