During the second episode of the “Farewell Season,” on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Wynonna Judd said that she is struggling to overcome addiction, betrayal and insecurities. However, from the manic energy displayed and strange one-liners expressed, Judd seemed to be emotionally on the edge. Albeit, Wynonna did express nervousness about being on this episode early on during the interview with Oprah, but Wynonna’s strange behavior seemed much more than the typical jitters.
Even stranger is the fact that no one on the internet, twitter or youtube is addressing what was clearly a whacked out Wynonna appearing to disconnect from reality while Oprah handled her with kid gloves. In fact, this whole episode is similar in oddness to the infamous Tom Cruise interview.
Half-way during the interview, Oprah exclaimed that she hadn’t expected a therapy session, clearly surprised by the intensity of Judd’s demeanor. However, Oprah also clearly had a certain agenda–to find out what happened to Wynonna’s ex-husband accused of sexual battery of a minor. As Kitty Kelley has pointed out in her tell-all biography, “Oprah,” there have been numerous Oprah shows devoted to sexual abuse, either because of Oprah’s own experiences or because the host recognizes how the subject is a lightning rod and ratings grabber for her show.
In any case, Oprah has a big challenge–to wow her current audience into following her to the new OWN channel on cable. Interviews like Judd’s–even with her strange interaction with Oprah–are going to get ratings and perhaps remind us why we watch Oprah in the first place. On the surface, it might be to learn how to live our best life, and perhaps even be entertained, but most of all it is to get the juicy details we can’t get otherwise.
Even Oprah seemed to understand this, while seeming uneasy with Judd’s craziness, she also was encouraging it just the same. She can get anyone to confess, to crumble, to cry and to commit to about anything because of the aura she has built up about her show. Now we just have to see if she can continue to deliver this season and into the next projects she has going on.
