With fall coming it is a great time to visit an orchard. I love being outdoors in the fall with the crisp fresh air and seeing all the colors change. Orchards are a great way to enjoy this. A lot of them are kid-friendly with many activities for families to enjoy together. Not to mention the great products you can buy and do taste tests on!
You can check online to see if there are any orchards in your area and then give them a call if they do not have an actual website to find out more. Along with finding out their hours you can see what products they sell and what activities they offer for kids. Most charge some fees for the activities, but it is usually not too expensive.
Orchards usually have a store where you can buy items and do taste tests to see what you like and do not like. Our local orchard offers a wide variety fruits, canned products, jams, preserves, nuts, breads, homemade pies, cookies and excellent apple cider! They also have wonderful handmade products such as decorations, quilts, aprons, pot holders, baby bibs, baby blankets, etc. I am sure most orchards offer pretty much the same products.
Many orchards offer some great outdoor fun for families to enjoy. Hayrides are very fun for kids and adults. Some orchards have a petting zoo and have feed for kids to give the animals. Many offer small rides such as a train for kids and even horseback riding. Kids always love mazes and obstacle courses. A lot of orchards construct hay mazes for kids to crawl and walk through. Some even have corn mazes. Face painting is another hit for kids and is sometimes offered.
Along with all the fun activities, orchards may have a little restaurant of sorts for families to eat at while they are there. One that I have been to offers things like hotdogs, polish sausage, sloppy joes, chips, french fries, sodas, juice, etc. And don’t forget dessert. Many will serve pies, cookies, cakes, and apples with different toppings such as warm caramel and nuts, cinnamon and sugar or homemade apple dip. While you are enjoying your food some orchards will put on a skit or talk about their orchard and how it began.
Before you leave check to see if they have a pumpkin patch. It is fun for kids to pick out their own pumpkin fresh from a patch. Some orchards offer picked ones that have faces painted on them.
So if you enjoy the outdoors, fresh food items and family activities check to see if there is an orchard in your neck of the woods. Be sure and take along the camera for some great family photos!
