A few days ago one of our two dogs (Maggie) had an odd reaction to something that made her ear become swollen. Having pets all my life and volunteering with animal rescue shelters I knew that this was something that required veterinary care. The problem was that I have had a lot of experience with vets in our area and did not trust any of them. Previously we have been over charged and even paid for services that were not given to us. And when you refuse to pay you get black listed.
I remembered that there was a relatively new vet in the area so we called them to see what their thoughts were on our Maggie’s new ear condition. The call was answered by a women who was very polite, she answered my questions upfront without making me feel like I was inconveniencing her. She knew right away the cause of her ear problem and she was nice enough to add up the costs without all that estimate talk. They only had business hours till noon and she still fit us in, without charging us emergency visit costs.
My previous experience when calling vets brought me to the conclusion that they did not want to answer your questions when it came to costs and care. They would always revert to the Dr. would have to see them before we could say how much it might cost and after you take your pet, WHAM! Your hit with a bill that is just not reasonable and if you can’t pay well then you get the your not responsible enough to have a pet if you can’t afford them attitude. One time I called in regards to an emergency with our St. Bernard and the vet I called gave me an estimate of $1,200 and after hanging up with them and speaking to my husband I called back and asked them a question and my estimated immediately jumped to $1,700. This was not the case here at Blakeslee Animal Clinic. We actually ended up paying less than our phone estimate. A very welcomed change.
Dr. Church was very informative, educating us on the options of care and assured us that he wouldn’t take our money for something that didn’t need treatment and he gave us the choice on which treatment we wanted to choose. Letting us know all the facts and possible circumstance of each case. He spent at least half an hour with us and Maggie. He seemed to already know what questions we’d ask and that money is a very real issue. My husband and I felt very comfortable. Dr. Church was very cautious with his charging us and we did not even have to get into our financial circumstances. He seemed to generally care about our dog and our money.
Dr. Andrew Church, grew up in Seattle and moved to the Poconos in 1996. He has been working in veterinary medicine since his days in Seattle where he worked as a veterinary assistant for 3 years before moving east. He also had his own dog training business where he specialized in “problem” dogs and protection training. After moving to Pennsylvania he began attending ESU but continued to work as a dog trainer and got a job working as a veterinary assistant at a local veterinary hospital. I would highly recommend this Veterinary Clinic and Dr Church. I will be using them in the future to care for all our pets and I am pleased that he is only a five minute drive from our home, so that if we ever did have a pet emergency we know we could get their quick enough. I am confident in the level of care he gave our Maggie, Neither of us felt taken advantage of by Dr. Church like we had in past experiences with other vets. For the first time we had a positive experience. I hope Dr. Church does well here and that he continues to provide good quality pet care in our area.
