Like many other modes of transportation, bus travel is becoming more technological and focused on customer comfort. This can be easily seen by the growing number of bus companies that offer in-route movies, canned music and even WiFi connections. Despite these fine services offered by the bus company, it is always a good idea to supplement your journey with a few of your own amenities that will make your trip more enjoyable and comfortable.
Bottled spring water and fresh fruit may be hard to come by or expensive, so be sure to pack some of these items in a place, where they will be readily accessible. Choose a fruit that travels well like apples or oranges or you might want to consider dried fruit and nuts, if you are traveling for long distances. Another good idea is to bring along a specialty item that you really enjoy and may not be available along the route. This could be a packaged pastry that is just sold in the area where you live.
The art of travel includes knowing just what little extra necessities are needed that will make your ride more comfortable. The first things that you might need are a small pillow and lightweight blanket for overnight journeys. Also, you might want include eye patches and/or earplugs as well. If your nighttime rest includes any medications, then you want to make sure that you have those items on your person along with a bottle of water to wash the medicine down.
Some bus companies are just beginning to use motor coaches with WiFi connections, so now you can bring along a laptop, netbook or other similar device and stay online for the whole trip. However, this service is usually only available on routes that run between major cities and the use of talking devices on board is still either strongly discouraged or completely banned.
Other old-fashioned forms of entertainment like books, magazines, chess and checkers (with magnetic pieces) still work to pass the time away – or – you may find that your bus company now shows a video movie on TV screens that are mounted overhead. All of these things are a great way to make the trip more enjoyable.
Carrying extra money in a safe place is a good idea, as well as packing along some travelers checks as an extra precaution. When traveling by bus in foreign countries, you might even consider placing additional cash, passport and valuables in a money belt, just to make sure these precious items arrive at your next destination at the same time that you do.
