Usually you begin packing your bag two weeks before you are expected to deliver (sooner if you are a higher risk of premature labor) This will save you much un-needed stress because you will not need to waddle around while in labor, trying to remember what you will need. Things like items for while you are staying in the hospital for you and your baby.

Mom and Dads Bag items
While you are in labor you will enjoy having things like books and video games to keep you entertained. Other items that will be appreciated later are socks or slippers, CD player to soothe, lip balm and lotion for massages. Items that will need will be toothbrushes for you and your partner, toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant for both of you. Another item is your cell phone; this will be great when you need to keep family members and friends up to date on the progress. Some other items you may want to keep in mind are batteries for the camera, the camera, a list of names and phone numbers to keep everyone up to date, and each a change of clothes and undergarments (something really comfortable for the drive home, maybe sweat pants and a baggy shirt, as your body is not going to fit much for a few weeks) Remember to pack a nursing bra and gown if you plan on breast feeding.
Baby Bag items
You will need a few changes of clothes for your newborn, some hospitals require you too keep your baby in the hospital gowns they provide. So keep that in mind when packing the extra clothes. It is also best to pack a few diapers, some diaper cream, wipes, socks, warm blankets and an extra hat. And the last thing you will need is bottles if you decide to bottle feed.
You are required to have a infant car seat available and ready to go before you can leave the hospital. Other items that might make it more comfortable is a screen for the car window.
