Getting the whole family pinned down in one place long enough to have a family meal can prove to be one of the most challenging tasks of our modern day living. Between appointments, after school activities, homework, and let’s see, have I left out anything? You barely get time to eat much less sit down with the entire family for a pleasant family dinner.
I found some great suggestions in the September 2010 issue of Parenting School Years, along with my own bit of ideas that have worked around our family table too. Hopefully, by the time you’ve read this you’ll have some good ideas on how to make family meal time more fun just in time for tonight’s dinner with the family!
Solve homework problems
Dinner can be a casual more relaxing time for kids to bring their most difficult homework problems to the table. During this time they can ask the family for help with their hardest problem of the evening, over the family meal. This is also a great way to promote family unity while everyone problem solves over some good food.
Play “If I were”
One great suggestion made in the Parenting School Years article, was to play a game that has everyone pretending to be something like say, the class president. Ask them what they would do if they were the class president, or maybe the president of another establishment. You can venture off into other types of jobs as well.
This is my own idea that was given to me by a moms group that I used to attend. It’s fun and it gives everyone a chance to sound off about the good and bad aspects of their individual day. Start by shouting out “high, low”. From there pick a person to begin. Have them tell the family about the best part of their day as well as the worst part of their day. From there, their free to elaborate if they would like to, and if they’d rather not, that’s fine too. The parenting plus, is you get a chance find out about how your kids day went.
Plan the week
Go around to each individual in the family, and have them tell you about their upcoming week ahead. That can be used as a good time to plan rides to and from places as well as coordinate other family events that need to be considered throughout the week.
Have you found a good idea among these to implement tonite at family mealtime? Hopefully you have and you’ll be able to provide a pleasant family dinner with some good times to boot!
