Chibueze Okorie is a man who knows all about paying his dues. In 1989, one year after arriving in New York from his native Nigeria he was arrested for chauffeuring a criminal at large and spent 18 months in federal prison. While serving time he started to study the bible and and decided to dedicate his life to helping other prisoners. He is now the director of Project Connect, an outreach program based at The Church of Gethsemane where he is the Minister of Evangelism.
Project Connect helps former prisoners reintegrate back into society and offers a support group that helps them connect with others and discuss issues regarding their transition, finding employment and maintaining good relationships. The meetings are facilitated by members of the group who encourage others to share their experiences and offer feedback and support to solve the challenges they face reintegrating back into the community. The church also offers educational programs, job training and housing support, working in alliance with the JusticeWorks Community, The Correctional Association of New York, and The Women’s Prison Association to advocate systematic changes that could offer alternatives to incarceration and provide support for the families of prisoners.
If you are interested in volunteering for Project Connect or you wish to provide support you can contact Mr. Okorie directly at 718-499-6704 ext. 207.
