Most people already know about the two failed killings of The Family, but there are other crimes The Family allegedly committed.
As The Family awaited the predicted race wars between the whites and the blacks. Charles Manson began telling The Family that perhaps they need to help the war “Helter Skelter.” Tex, introduced in my previous article, was asked by Charles to gather money for the cause. He stole money from Bernard Crowe, an African-American drug dealer. When Crowe threatened to kill The Family, Manson became infuriated and allegedly shot Crowe.
Several weeks later Manson instructed The Family to get money from one, Gary Hinman. Apparently, Hinman had inherited a good sum of money and Charles wanted that money. On-again off-again member, Bobby Beausoleil, Mary Brunner and Susan Atkins took Hinman hostage for several days. Manson came and went. Beausoleil killed Hinman and the girls allegedly wrote on the walls with Hinman’s blood “Political piggy”, along with symbols associated with the Black Panther group.
On August 8, 1969, Manson directed family members Watson, Atkins, Kassabian, and Krenwinkel to Tate’s home and “totally destroy everyone in (it), as gruesome as you can.” The Family members went to the home, cutting the phone lines before entering, as a car approached the home. The driver, Steve Parent, was shot by Watson as the women hid. Parent was just eighteen at the time of his death. Kassabian was commanded to watch the front gate.
The victims in the Tate murders:
Sharon Tate, eight-months pregnant at the time.
Wojciech Frykowski a friend of Roman Polanski.
Jay Sebring a hair dresser.
Abigail Folger, heiress to the Folger fortune.
The Family killed everyone in the house. True to Manson’s instructions, the crime was horrifically gruesome. Every victim was brutally stabbed, hit, kicked, shot and tortured. Tate’s tearful cries to let her live because she was pregnant were ignored and she, too, was viciously massacred. Atkins took blood from the dead Tate and drew the word “pig” on the front door. The Family left he scene, reportedly disposed of their overly-bloody clothing and went back to the ranch.
The following night the same four Family members, along with Leslie Van Houten and Steve “Clem” Grogan, went to the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Again, the killing were fiercely sadistic and torturous. After the couples’ deaths, the killers hideously mutilated their bodies. Watson carved the word “War” into the man’s stomach.
Kasabian was later directed by Manson to kill a friend of hers. She purposely went to the wrong apartment; and when a stranger answered the door, The Family left the scene.
All Family members played a role in the killings. However, during and after the trials Watson, Atkins and others would deny the charges, changing their statements to indicate that they did not do anything; it was someone else.
What part Charles played in the murders is still debated to this day. At the trials The Family members lied to ensure that Charles would not go to jail.
