Miniature roses are an exquisite touch to any garden, whether you choose to blend your roses with other flowers in a garden, or create a garden of miniature roses to stand on their own. Miniature roses are perfect for pocket gardens, peeking out of stone walls, or any other small spaces that need a touch of elegant beauty. Houston, Texas is a terrific place to grow beautiful miniature roses, as there are many gorgeous varieties that will survive and thrive in the Houston heat. If you plan out your garden, do a little homework, purchase the proper plants and then give them a good healthy start in your garden, your Houston, Texas miniature roses should flourish.
Like all roses, miniature roses need direct sunlight, at least six hours. However, if you purchase your plants from an indoor nursery or a greenhouse, be sure to take about ten days to gently ease them into the full glare of the Houston, Texas sun. You don’t want to shock your little flowers! You will also need to give them time to spread their roots if you purchase your miniature roses potted. Don’t transplant them immediately into the ground – give them a chance to expand their roots by planting them in a large pot (one or two gallons) for about a month or two. Then your miniature roses will be ready to transplant to your Houston, Texas garden. Mix a handful of bone meal into our “gumbo” soil before planting to give them a great start. You can also mix in a commercial rose bed mix, or use a little compost or other organic material.
Your Houston, Texas miniature roses need the same care as regular roses, once they are established. Water them once a week, spray and fertilize them, and don’t forget to mulch! Below are some miniature roses that will flourish in the Houston, Texas climate while bringing their one-of-a-kind beauty and elegance to your garden.
