In 2009, Charlie Langton had an interview with Royal Oak’s mayor Jim Ellison and in the first part of this interview it is quite apparent that the commissioners of Royal Oak are not getting along and a great deal of time is being spent on dealing with petty issues instead of more important issues like dealing with the 3 million dollar budget.
In the past few years there have been allegations against one city commissioner for acting improperly at a meeting. Mayor Ellison does go into quite a bit of detail about this allegation in his meeting with Charlie Langton. Some commissioners actually wanted to have this guy discharged but Mayor Ellis said they didn’t have the authority and by the end of the meeting the charges were dismissed; wonder how long all that took. There has been another allegation that the sheriff was investigating 3 members of the board for impropriety in influencing the Zoning Board of Appeals but the mayor pointed out that there was no police report so there couldn’t be that big of an investigation going on. Also city manager, Tom Hoover resigned because he could not get full commission support and knew he would not be able to accomplish anything with a council divided.
Commissioners even went so far as to complain that the member who hosted the Royal Oak show was dominating the public access cable channel and getting too much exposure; really? When you are involved in politics isn’t exposure what you want? The commissioners of Royal Oak need to stop bickering about petty issues and concentrate on bigger problems like improvements to the city, building a better relation with businesses and residents, bringing jobs and money to the city and decreasing crime. Commissioners need to get along and work together for a better, brighter future in Royal Oak.
