Don’t have a napkin holder? Why not? You’ve got a picture frame, don’t you? If so, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have a napkin holder. Use a picture frame or two to make a napkin holder that’s unlike any other. You don’t have to go out and try to find a napkin holder that coordinates with your kitchen décor; you can make it coordinate no matter what the theme or color scheme of your kitchen.
One version of the napkin holder is made with a single picture frame. This one requires a couple of pieces of wood to complete. The wood you need is easy to find, already cut, at any craft store. Purchase the slabs in a bag of several for a couple of bucks. The wood pieces should be at least a few inches wide and seven inches long.
There are some specifics for the particular picture frame you use. It should be a 5″x7″ frame that has flat sides. The frame itself should be plastic, resin or wood but not metal. Also, the frame should be at least an inch wide. It should be smooth with no protruding embellishments around the perimeter.
To assemble the napkin holder, remove the picture frame backing, then lay the frame on a piece of cardboard. Draw around the frame and cut out the cardboard and set it aside. Now decide on the picture you will display. It can be an image from a magazine, a piece of fabric or decorative paper, or can even be flat, foam shapes glued to a background. The picture frame will be used on its side so keep this in mind when selecting the design for inside the frame. When the picture is in place simply glue the cardboard piece to the backside.
Set one of the wooden slabs on a flat surface. Position it so that one of the long sides is facing you. Turn the picture frame on its side and glue it to the side of the wood facing you. Make sure the image inside the frame is facing you. Now, glue a second slab of wood to the opposite side of the wooden base.
A different version of the napkin holder is made by replacing the second piece of wood with a second picture frame. This frame can be made to match the first picture or can be a different picture with the same theme. The finished napkin holder is unique and takes only a few minutes to assemble.
