Whether you collect angels, or you’re just thinking about making an angel ornament, you’ll love a large or small angel you make in no time. Make a small one and use it as an ornament or even a pin. Use a large pinecone to make an angel that can be hung on the front door during the Christmas season. No matter what size you make the angel, or where you display it, she’ll be one you’ll cherish forever.
Choose the pinecone you want to use for the angel project. The perfect pinecone can be large or small but should be one that’s slender. However, you can make a chubby angel by using an ordinary pinecone. Start by cleaning the pinecone well. Then decide on how you want to decorate it to turn it into a dress for the angel.
Paint the pinecone white, gold or even silver. Or, just coat the pinecone with gold or silver glitter. After it’s dry turn the pinecone upside-down to make the angel. The point of the pinecone will face down, and become the bottom of the angel’s gown, and the wide end of the pinecone will become the neck area of the angel.
Use a wooden bead to make the head. Choose a size of bead that will be proportionate to the pinecone. Paint a simple face on the angel with a permanent marker. If you want to make an ornament, cut a piece of twine, fold it in half and slide the ends into the bead. A little hot glue will keep them in the hole. If you won’t be hanging the angel you can skip this step.
Glue the wooden ball onto the wide end of the pinecone so that one hole of the bead faces upwards. Cut a piece of wired ribbon to make the wings. Cut a piece of the ribbon to be as long as you want the wings. Twist the ribbon once, right in the middle, then glue the twisted area to the back of the angel, between the bead and the pinecone. You can use pinking shears or cut another pattern at the ends of the ribbon. Glue on yarn, doll hair or even cotton balls to make the hair for the angel. Turn a piece of gold or silver pipe cleaner into a circle and glue to the top of the head.
If the angel is small you can make a pin for it by simply gluing on a pin back hardware piece from a craft store. Or, stick a magnet on the back and the angel can hang on the refrigerator. To make a hanger for a larger pinecone angel that goes on the door just glue a loop of thread onto the pinecone, before adding the head, then glue the head over the ends of the thread.
Whether you wear the angel as a pin, use two of them on your curtain tie-backs, hang one on the front door, or hang one as a tree ornament, you’ll love the little pinecone angels which are simply adorable!
