One of the best things about gardening in Houston, Texas is that you can truly have a four season garden. Since there is (almost) no chance of snow here in Houston, you can choose plants and shrubs that will flower spring, summer, winter and fall. Nothing picks you up more on a cold winter day than to look at your garden and enjoy what’s flowering there. If you would enjoy seeing your garden bloom no matter what the season or time of year, choose from each of the seasons’ plants below to enjoy your Houston, Texas garden year round. (An overview of suggested perennials is provided, along with a few suggestions for annuals for each season.)
Spring Blooming Plants.
Bowles Mauve Wallflower. These beautiful orange, purple and yellow flowers will bloom in April and May in your Houston, Texas four season garden. Plant them in the fall in full to partial sun, preferably in soil with good drainage. These flowers are deer and rabbit resistant, and will bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas four season garden.
Summer Snapdragons. If you enjoy pink, purple, white and multicolor flowers, the summer snapdragon is the best choice for you. Plant this perennial in full to partial sun in your Houston, Texas four season garden during the spring, and it will bloom from spring through the first frost. These flowers will reach heights of up to three feet and will also bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden.
Black-eyed Susans. Another perennial that will bloom from spring through the first frost, plant these flowers in the early spring and start enjoying their sunny gold blooms. For spring blooming annuals, plant Texas Bluebonnets and Calendula.
Summer Blooming Plants.

For summer blooming annuals, try Alyssum, Painted Nettle Coleus and Early Cosmos.
Yellow Mussaenda. This three foot tall perennial has beautiful pale yellow flowers that will bloom in the fall until the first frost in your Houston, Texas four season garden. Moth Orchid. If you are looking for easy to grow flowers for your Houston, Texas four season garden, try this perennial. It has multicolor blooms that will start in the fall and last almost year round. They can be planted at any time of year, and do best in the dappled shade of your four season garden. This flower cannot tolerate the direct Houston, Texas sun.
For fall blooming annuals plant Petunias, Pansies and Drummond Phlox.
WinterBlooming Plants. (This is the best part of your Houston, Texas four season garden – while many other parts of the country are shoveling snow, you’re gardening!)
African Daisy. These showy flowers will bloom in orange, pink, purple and cream all winter long in your Houston, Texas four season garden. These perennials prefer full or partial sun, and should be planted in the fall. African Daisies can tolerate cold down to 25 degrees, and can grow to be about two feet high.
Gazania. To enjoy the multicolored flowers of this perennial all winter, plant them in the fall in full sun in your Houston, Texas four season garden. It has very striking blooms that will keep your garden beautiful right through the winter until May. They do require very good drainage.
For winter blooming annuals, plant English Daisy, Fairy Primrose and Fuchsia.
