Today I came home from Gamestop and cracked open my new Playstation Move controllers, plugged them into the PS3 and then promptly geeked out as the colors on top of the funky new motion controller glowed purple, green and blue.
If you know the three major video game consoles out there, the one that, until recently, held the title for most motioned controlled would be the Nintendo Wii. Marketed as a family system, Nintendo has been milking that niche group well for the past 4 years. Sony and Microsoft have their own systems that target a more “hardcore” audience.
But we all know that everyone wants to make money, so both Sony and Microsoft are trying to dip into the market that Nintendo commands. They each have camera based motion controllers: XBox360 with their Kinect (a 3d camera with no other accessory) and the Playstation Move.
The Move arrived state-side on the 17th and here’s why you should care:
The Playstation Move controller weighs slightly less than the Sixaxis/Dualshock3 controller, and is extremely ergonomic in it’s design. The buttons are easy to reach and really responsive.
Have a kid? My 5 year old daughter slipped the band around her wrist and within a minute was able to control some blocks in the game of Tumble. She had no problem reaching all the buttons, so yes it will be easily accessible by anyone in your family.
We also dug into the kid-friendly Eyepet game. The kids really thought it was something else. I could enjoy it only as long as the kids were around.
Another part of the controls: I didn’t follow any directions, but was easily able to maneuver the Cross-Media-Bar (XMB) by just using the Move controller. It’s a little sensitive, but maybe I need to read something on exactly how to control it.
All it’s cracked up to be?
There was a lot of hype for this controller, about how it’s “1:1” motion with no lag is just amazing… and yes, it is really a blast. I’ve played the Wii, and while it mimics the controls and some early games, the HD display is amazing, and I think the controls are more spot on.
Not many to start out with! They’re mainly family/party oriented, but read about Playstation Move Release Titles to see what would be the best game for you.
Should I get it?
I’m a single guy in my 30s: If you own the PS3 and have $100 and you just have to have the newest technology, then go for it. It’s fun to tool around with the controller. The games will come out soon for you.
Don’t have $100? Don’t care about cutesy or party games? Wait until the hardcore games like Killzone 3 or Dead Space 2 come out and then pick it up.
I’m a family person in my 30s with 2 young children: Here’s what my 5 year old daughter said after spending a day with the Move: “It’s awesome!”
The games that came out at release time are family centric and a lot of fun.
So far, I’m a big fan. The technology is cool, the graphics are sweet, the controls are tight, and the games are coming.
