Is there a better way to appreciate the recreational facilities on Mission Bay in San Diego than to watch the Powerboat races? Since 1964, boat enthusiasts and race fans have been filling the shores of Mission Bay one weekend a year. This month, The Bayfair World Series of Powerboat Racing returns to San Diego on the weekend of September 17th, 18th and 19th, 2010. The powerboat races will once again bring boat enthusiasts of all ages to the Mission Bay area.
Presenting over 23 individual racing classes and more than 150 competition teams, the powerboats reach racing speeds of over 225 miles an hour. The race course conditions and the summer weather are a leading factor in drawing the racers and the fans back every year. It is a fun family event with live entertainment, interactive exhibits, food and drink vendors, a kid’s fun zone and Saturday night fireworks display.
Keeping the 150,000 spectators and race fans coming back for more is important and by bringing racing classes such as Limited Class Hydroplanes, Unlimited Lights, Offshore Power Boats, and many other classes, race fans will have plenty of excitement. Bayfair attracts more powerboat racers than any other location in the world and is a hallmark event in the powerboat racing community.
Mission Bay is the home of the famed Bill Muncey Memorial Race Course, the fastest race course in the world. The bay waters and surrounding inlets made Mission Bay a great water race way and for the weekend of September 17th through the 19th; the water belongs to the powerboat racers. Not to be missed, the Drag Boat Races are planned to take place in front of Crown Point Shores in front of thousands of motor sports fans!
From a local perspective, Mission Bay parking lots fill up fast. For a fee of $20 per day, parking is available on East Vacation Island and at Crown Point Shores. To park on Fiesta Island, the fee is $10. There are no in-and-out parking privileges so if you leave in the middle of the day, you will have to pay the parking fee again.
This year, RV owners can reserve a 12-foot by 15-foot RV space where they can park their RV on the bay for the entire weekend. The cost is $400 for the four days and reservations can be made by visiting the link to the San Diego Bayfair web site. RV space is limited and reservations are filling fast. Hotels and other accommodations are available nearby, as is Sea World Adventure Park and the San Diego Zoo.
To help you enjoy a weekend of sun and racing, it would be a good idea to arrive at the bay early, bring sun screen, water, and a wear a hat and sun glasses. Picking up a package of foam ear plugs at the drug store before you arrive is an excellent idea; powerboat engines are very loud and engine noise carries a great distance over the water.
